Paulo Branco
Summary
Web 2.0 is a lot more than just a new version of the Web based on interaction, participation, collaboration and knowledge creation. It also carries a new insight into the users’ role, i.e, they are not only consumers of content and information, but producers as well. Social network sites are an example of this new form of interaction and presence on the web. These platforms became tools not only to connect with friends, but also in a professional way. Being present on a social network sites enables a person to connect with enterprises and companies, or even with possible employers and people with the same interests. Also, these tools enable the user with few digital skills to create a personal page on the web, something unthinkable a decade ago. Three of the major social networks are Facebook, Twitter and Google+, they all have their specifications and differences, and it’s up to the user to choose which one(s) they want to work with.
So, in this workshop we intend to show the features and potential of social networking sites in a general way, and these three platforms in a more specific way. Also, we will see how anyone can use them both in personal and professional way understanding how to manage the privacy and how to interoperate with other tools from Web 2.0.
